The Dogwood had a legend that I had not heard until I was an older adult. I had always believed the story, never questioning.. Recently, after doing some searching, I discovered that the Dogwood Tree is not a tree found in the area Christ lived, therefore it is merely a great legend. The flower, however, greatly resembles the cross. We should know the history of what we are celebrating on Easter and Christmas.
Why do we make up things that are not true and tell it to children? Is there something we missed in some part of our lives that we are trying to make up for or make more interesting by creating fantasies and fairytales?
Children already have a difficult time trying to understand what they are being taught by so many sources when they are young. Many of the things I learned while I was very young, are etched in my memory much more vividly than the things that happened this year.
The brain is much like a new computer when we are young. That absorbent sponge is retaining everything it is learning; therefore, it is important to teach children the truth and the importance of honesty. We are to be honest with them, not simply expect it from them. We should be teaching them that some people may tell them things that are not so, but also teach them they can always come to their parents, who should be their source of truth, until they get old enough to talk to God. Unfortunately, not all of us have the luxury of parents who take that initiative, or realize the importance of it when children are at that impressionable age. I was very confused to find I had been lied to about these holidays. It certainly explained my questions as to why Santa & the Easter Bunny loved other children more than he did my siblings and I.
What has been the reason for fables and fairytales? Why, have children been told false stories by those they trusted most? I ask this question as a young child, and again as a mom of 3 sons. I’ve questioned even more-so recently as I watch the celebration and worship on Christmas and Easter of “things” that have nothing to do with Christ. These “things” are being celebrated on the days we have set aside for Him. My feeling is…God is not happy about this.
I’ll avoid going into the history of the Easter bunny arriving on the scene in the 1700’s, following a tradition from another country. I would prefer the reader look up those facts from history. I won’t talk about Christmas being a celebration of “trees” which later was lumped in with the Christian’s celebration of Christ. Later, along comes Santa Clause, leading many to believe this was the reason for the Christian holiday. It was as if the celebration of Christs’ birth and resurrection were not enough to celebrate.
For centuries, many have tried to push God out of the picture. Many Christians do not pay particular attention to what is being decided for them or against them, until their rights are in question.
Today, with the mess we are in, dealing with corrupt leaders, countries fighting, while those who hate us and what we stand for, are trying to gain control of our country. Maybe we should be paying closer attention.
It is time to put the Easter bunny and Santa on a plane to another country. We must give back the honor and respect we owe Jesus, and stop worshiping idols. In conclusion, I ask myself why, a country would create and sell Christian items to the United States, yet punish and/or kill citizens in their country for having these items in their possession. Just a thought!
Sincerely, Mo
