Embracing Silver & Wisdom

1975

In September of 2021, after 23 years, I left the field of healthcare and pharmacy. I thought it might be time to settle back and start making a few changes, as well as accept some things I had tried & failed to change..as Tim McGraw so eloquently put it….”I think I’ll take a moment, celebrate my age…….The ending of an era, and the turning of a page…..Now it’s time to focus in on where I go from here…

Hair color was one of the things I changed. I began to genetically gray in my late 20’s, with the first stands found just after the teen years. My color was mousy brown with touches of auburn highlights. The silver gray had found its’ way to my roots early on. Somewhere around 30 years old, after hearing my 5 year old son attributing my fading color with a short life span, I thought it best to put his mind at ease, and cover the silver…. and so I did, coloring regularly for roughly the next 33 years or so.

Change is not always easy, but without it we would remain in the same place doing the same thing, being the same person, seeing from the same window all of our life. We must risk change in order to grow. Therefore, I decided last June to Embrace the Silver. I am sooo loving the change.

When I was a young girl in about the 4th grade, I didn’t want to wear curlers in my hair because it made me look ugly. One of my grandmothers shared with me the dreadful thought that there are times we have to look ugly for a little while in order to look pretty. That didn’t sound like something I wanted to do, but, I complied. That thought has made its’ way back to me every now and again. This came to be the case as I embraced the Silver journey. The new look was a bit like Cruella De Vil. It didn’t matter though as I am not out to make a movie or anything. lol

In the Autumn of your life, you are caught somewhere between Senior discounts, Social Security, Retirement and Death. I heard the term, “Wisdom Discount”, recently at the Dental office after an appt. While checking out, I was told by the receptionist that I qualified for this discount. I like Wisdom, it sounds so much nicer than Senior. Although it means the same, Wisdom adds a note of respect. In High School & college, having the title of Senior was an honor, however when you reach the level of Senior in our society, I’m not sure the respect a senior should get is what is actually given.

I will celebrate my age in any case and look forward to the next 30 years with joy and anticipation, even if my memory begins to fade or if the clouds part and my departure is sooner than that. I will enjoy all the blessings that come with this age, the Wisdom, the Silver Hair & the Years & I look forward to Embracing them all!

Sincerely,

Mo
