I’ve heard this term over the years, without a clue as to where it originated. This morning it was explained to me as a Greek mythology. As I listened to the story, and later read an article in Wikipedia, my take away was the lesson behind the story.
Although the story, fable, or whatever is is considered, the lesson to be learned is in line with the same teachings as Christ’s parables.
From the dawn of time, God has been here and has communicated with us. There is no doubt in my mind, man has tried in numerous ways to discredit God’s presence and instead worshiped that which only they “could see”. The planets, for one. They worshiped the things created by, the one & only God they should have worshiped instead.
Without going into Greek mythology, which I do not follow or believe in, this is what’s behind the term, “Don’t Fly Too Close To The Sun”.
The story was one of Daedalus and Icarus, an ancient Greek myth famously recorded by the Roman poet Ovid in his Metamorphoses.
According to the story, Daedalus, a mythical inventor, and his son, Icarus, were held captive by King Minos.
Daedalus created wings made of feathers and bees wax to escape from Crete where he & Icarus were able to fly from captivity. Daedalus warned his son not to fly too close to the ground or too close to the sun. Icarus, however, ignored his father’s warnings and flew too close to the sun. His wings melted and he fell into the sea where he met his end.

There was so much evil in the stories and events surrounding Greek worship and idolatry I steer away from it. The evil in these civilizations make me wonder how & if God was able to rescue any one of them during this and other periods of time with such demonic forces.
in times before Christ, and the introduction of the Holy Spirit, when children were raised having no influence or nurturing of Godly people, (the Jews at that time) they had only their communication with the leaders telling them what to believe.
The moral of the story: Take caution you do not become too complacent and lackadaisical, or too haughty and arrogant. If you do, in time, you are going to crash and burn. Seek the truth always, pray continually, and keep yourself in balance.
Sincerely,
Mo
